Seasonal Fruits and Vegetables
Avoid strawberries in January! Each fruit and vegetable has its own season. Therefore pay special attention to the geographical origin, and if possible to the mode of culture of the products proposed on markets and department stores!
The Paleo diet is a natural nutritional approach which is also local. Our ancestors ate only those that were close to their territory. Therefore although fruits and organic vegetables may turn out to be a better choice when compared to the others, it is also important to consume fruits and vegetables that are cultivated in your country, or even your region.
By consuming local foods, you contribute your support to the producers of your region, or your country (in France, a farm disappears in every 20 minutes, do you want hold yourself responsible for this?).
Moreover, a local seasonal fruit (yes, the can still be found if you look hard enough) picked at perfect maturity a little before it reaches your dishes, is certain to come with a rather better taste than a fruit that is matured in a boat refrigerator for number of weeks. And not to mention the degraded properties of these fruits relative to a local seasonal fruit.
In addition, learn to determine which fruits and vegetables were raised during off seasons in greenhouses from those that were planted on the earth in line with their respective seasons. Do not hesitate to seek information and find out more about the origin (compulsory display) and the mode of culture (optional display).
In a nutshell, eating fruits and vegetables is most beneficial and good, but picking out the right ones is even better. Did you know that there are studies showing that certain fruits cultivated using pesticides have 8 times fewer vitamins and other nutriments than local fruits that are grown under soil respecting their natural cycle (pesticide-free fertilized earth). So it’s high time that you act and learn to choose your fruits and vegetables with passion while being attentive on what you eat!
